About CBSE Class 10 Examination

Everything you need to know about the Central Board of Secondary Education — Class X.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examination for Class X — the Secondary School Examination — is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, the largest school board in India. Every year lakhs of students across India and abroad sit this examination, which is the gateway to Class XI stream selection.

Mathematics Options Students may choose Mathematics Standard (041) or Mathematics Basic (241). Basic is easier; both are full CBSE papers of the same class level
Marking Most papers are of 80 marks and 3 hours duration (from 2024); earlier papers were of 100 marks. There is no negative marking.
Qualification The CBSE Class X certificate is awarded on the basis of the board examination and internal assessment, and is required for Class XI admission

CBSE Class X candidates take a minimum of five subjects including a compulsory language. Mathematics can be taken as Standard (041) or Basic (241). Science and Social Science papers combine objective and descriptive questions, while English Language & Literature focuses on reading, writing and literature. Most theory papers are of 80 marks (from 2024) and 3 hours duration, with no negative marking. Papers are written in English, Hindi or other regional languages where offered.

What is the difference between Mathematics Standard and Basic?

Mathematics Standard (041) is at the regular level and is intended for students who plan to take Mathematics in Class XI. Mathematics Basic (241) covers the same syllabus at a slightly easier difficulty and is meant for students who do not intend to continue Mathematics after Class X.
