About Verbal Classification
Classification questions give four words and ask which one does not belong with the others. Three of the words share a category and the fourth comes from somewhere else. The answer is always the word that breaks the grouping, so the real task is to work out the category that exactly three of the words have in common.
What you need to understand
- Look for the category that three of the words share, not the category that any one word could be placed in.
- Many words belong to more than one group. The correct grouping is the one where three words share the most specific category.
- The odd word is usually drawn from a field related to the others, which is what makes the question worth asking.
- Read all four words before deciding, because the odd word is often the one that appears most familiar.
- The words are usually listed in no particular order, so the odd one may sit anywhere.
How to work through these questions
- Read all four words first and resist the urge to answer immediately.
- Ask what three of the words have in common, testing each word as the potential outsider in turn.
- Name the shared category in specific terms rather than broadly.
- Confirm that the word you have chosen genuinely cannot belong to that category.
- If two groupings seem possible, prefer the one in which three words share the tighter, more specific category.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Choosing an outsider based on a category that only two of the words share.
- Being drawn to a word because it is related to the general subject rather than to the other three words.
- Leaving the category vague, so all four words appear to qualify.
- Overlooking that the odd word belongs to a closely related field, which is exactly why it was chosen.
- Answering with the first word that feels different instead of testing each word as the outsider.

- Test each word as the possible outsider in turn.
- Mango, guava and papaya are all fruits, and the group of three holds together.
- Brinjal is a vegetable rather than a fruit, so it breaks the grouping.
- The category shared by the other three is specific enough to be the intended one.

How do I find the odd one out?
Test each word as the outsider in turn and ask whether the remaining three share a specific category. The word whose removal leaves the tightest group is the answer.
What if two words seem to be the odd one?
Compare how specific the two possible groupings are. One grouping usually rests on a tighter category than the other, and that is the intended answer.
Are these questions really vocabulary tests?
Only partly. They test whether you can group words by category, which is a reasoning skill. A wide vocabulary helps, but the method of testing each word as the outsider matters more.
How specific should the category be?
As specific as the three words allow. If the category has to be stretched so broadly that the fourth word also fits, it is the wrong category.
Does the order of the words matter?
No. The words are listed in no particular order, so the odd one can appear anywhere in the list and position gives no clue.
