Understanding JoSAA & CSAB Counselling: Quotas & Allocation Dynamics

Seat allotment for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs is managed centrally by JoSAA (Rounds 1–6) followed by CSAB Special Spot Rounds. Understanding the quota rules is crucial to maximizing your chances:

🏛️ Other State Quota (OS 50%)

Applicability: NITs and State-level GFTIs allocate 50% seats to Other State candidates.
Eligibility: Open to candidates who passed Class 12 outside the institute's home state.
Competition: Uniform national All India competition. Cutoffs are strictly aligned with national merit.

🏡 Home State Quota (HS 50%)

Applicability: 50% seats in each NIT reserved strictly for students who passed Class 12 within that state.
Relaxation Factor: Closing ranks are typically 1.5x to 3.0x wider than the Other State quota, providing a massive advantage to local candidates.

🌐 100% All India Quota (IIITs)

Applicability: Premier IIITs (Allahabad, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Lucknow) do NOT observe a 50% home state quota.
Single Pool: 100% of seats are filled strictly on All India CRL ranks, ensuring parity for top tech aspirants nationwide.

⚡ CSAB Special Rounds (Spot Vacancies)

Timeline: Conducted in late July / early August after JoSAA Round 6 ends.
Vacancy Opportunity: Seats surrendered by IIT entrants or dual-allottees are re-allocated. Cutoffs routinely relax by 5,000 to 20,000+ ranks.

Frequently Asked Questions: JEE Main Cutoffs & JoSAA Counselling

What is the difference between Home State (HS 50%) and Other State (OS 50%) Quota in NITs?
In all 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) across India, exactly 50% of the B.Tech seats are reserved for candidates whose home state (the state from where they completed Class 12) matches the location of the NIT. The remaining 50% of seats are open to candidates from all other Indian states under the Other State (OS) quota. In high-capacity states like Tamil Nadu (NIT Trichy), Kerala (NIT Calicut), and Assam (NIT Silchar), the Home State closing ranks are significantly more relaxed than the Other State ranks.
Do IIITs have a Home State Domicile Quota?
No. The vast majority of Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs, such as IIIT Allahabad, ABV-IIITM Gwalior, IIITDM Jabalpur, IIIT Lucknow, and IIIT Pune) admit 100% of their students through the All India Quota (AI). There is no 50% home state domicile reservation in premier IIITs, meaning closing ranks are uniform nationwide.
What is the Female-Only Supernumerary Quota in JoSAA?
To ensure gender diversity, the Ministry of Education mandates at least 20% female enrollment in all IITs and NITs. If female candidates do not reach 20% through normal merit, additional supernumerary seats are created specifically for girls. Female-only closing ranks in NITs are often 2,000 to 10,000 ranks higher than gender-neutral closing ranks for the same branch.
What is the difference between JoSAA and CSAB Counselling?
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts 6 rounds of unified seat allocation for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. After JoSAA concludes, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts 2 Special Spot Rounds to fill all remaining vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Cutoffs in CSAB Special Rounds frequently drop by 5,000 to 25,000 ranks compared to JoSAA Round 6.
What percentile is typically needed for Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) in top NITs?
For Top 5 NITs (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Rourkela, Allahabad), General category candidates generally require a percentile above 99.30%ile (AIR under 8,000) under the Other State quota. However, under Home State quota in certain states, CSE seats can be obtained at 98.20%ile (AIR 25,000+).
