About JEE Main Examination

JEE Main is the national-level entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes — B.E./B.Tech at NITs, IIITs and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). It also acts as the qualifying filter for JEE Advanced, which opens the doors to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Total: 90 questions • 300 marks • 3 hours. Each subject has 20 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and 10 Numerical Value questions. MCQ: +4 for correct, −1 for incorrect. Numerical: +4 for correct, no negative marking.

Marking Scheme

  • MCQ (20 per subject): +4 for correct answer, −1 for wrong answer, 0 for unanswered.
  • Numerical Value (10 per subject): +4 for correct value, 0 for wrong or unanswered (no negative marking).
  • Answering strategy: attempt numericals freely, but be careful with MCQs where negative marking applies.

How many questions are there in the JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)?

What is the marking scheme in JEE Main?

Each correct MCQ gives +4 marks and each incorrect MCQ gives −1 mark. Numerical value questions carry +4 for correct and no negative marking for wrong answers.

What is the duration of the JEE Main exam?

The Computer Based Test (CBT) is of 3 hours (180 minutes). The B.Arch paper is of 3 hours with an additional drawing test.
