Expert answers regarding district cutoffs, sectional thresholds, and safe admission score strategies.
Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti does not publish an official uniform nationwide cutoff list because selections are made district-by-district for each of the 650+ JNVs. Historically, the safe score for General category in high-competition districts is 88–92 marks for Urban Boys and 82–86 marks for Rural Boys out of 100. For SC/ST/OBC and Girls, the qualifying threshold is correspondingly 4–10 marks lower.
In every district JNV, 75% of the total seats (60 out of 80 seats) are legally reserved for students from rural schools. Because urban students compete only for the remaining 25% open seats, competition in urban areas is extremely intense, resulting in an urban cutoff that is typically 5 to 8 marks higher than rural cutoff.
Yes. To be considered for the merit list, a candidate must qualify independently in all three sections: Section 1 (Mental Ability Test - min ~20/50), Section 2 (Arithmetic Test - min ~10/25), and Section 3 (Language Test - min ~10/25). Failing to reach the minimum benchmark in even one section leads to non-selection, regardless of high overall total score.
NO. There is ZERO negative marking in JNVST. Each correct answer carries 1.25 marks (80 questions × 1.25 = 100 total marks). Unanswered or wrong questions receive 0 marks. Therefore, candidates should attempt all 80 questions on the OMR sheet without leaving any blank.
In JNVST, Mental Ability accounts for 50% of the entire exam (40 questions, 50 marks). Achieving 38–40 correct in Mental Ability and mastering high-yield Arithmetic topics (LCM/HCF, Fractions, Unitary Method, Simple Interest, Decimals) is the proven pathway to cross the 90-mark barrier.
