1. Land as the Lifeline of Rural India
In rural India, agricultural land is far more than physical dirt; it is the sole source of economic survival, social identity, and family livelihood for more than seventy percent of the population. A farming household depends entirely upon the crops harvested from its fields to feed its children, pay school fees, purchase medicine, and sustain life throughout the year. Consequently, even the minor shifting of a farm boundary can threaten a family's very survival.
2. The Characters: Mohan versus Raghu
The textbook narrative introduces two contrasting agrarian realities through the figures of Mohan and Raghu:
- Mohan (The Small Farmer): Mohan belongs to a modest farming family that owns a small agricultural plot. His small parcel of land is barely sufficient to sustain his family, requiring him and his kin to labor intensively during every sowing and harvesting season.
- Raghu (The Influential Landlord): Raghu is a wealthy, powerful agriculturalist who owns extensive tracts of fertile land in the village. Beyond his economic dominance, Raghu possesses strong political patronage—his family operates commercial businesses, and his uncle serves as the elected Sarpanch of the village.
3. The Encroachment and the Clash
The conflict erupted along the common boundary separating Mohan's and Raghu's adjoining fields:
- Shifting the Bund (मेड़): In Indian agriculture, a bund is a raised earthen ridge built between two fields to demarcate property boundaries and retain irrigation water. One morning, Raghu quietly shifted the common bund several feet into Mohan's field. By doing so, Raghu illegally absorbed a strip of Mohan's fertile land into his own holding, reducing Mohan's acreage and taking over Mohan's standing crops.
- Mohan's Courageous Confrontation: Although terrified of Raghu's wealth and political clout, Mohan could not afford to lose his family's precious land. He walked to Raghu's house to politely object and request that the bund be restored to its original, rightful position.
- Violent Retaliation: Instead of engaging in peaceful dialogue, Raghu arrogantly denied having moved the boundary. When Mohan persisted, Raghu summoned his hired farm hands. Raghu and his henchmen brutally attacked Mohan, beating him with sticks and causing severe injuries to his head and arms.
- Rescue by Neighbors: Hearing Mohan's cries for help, neighboring villagers rushed to the scene. They pulled Mohan away from the violent mob and administered emergency first aid to stop his profuse bleeding.
4. The Feudal Dilemma of Rural India
This altercation reflects a pervasive structural dilemma across rural India: small and marginal farmers frequently suffer boundary encroachments and crop theft silently, because powerful landlords utilize brute force, caste influence, and administrative connections to silence legitimate complaints.
