Fowler, a young romantic writer, expects a secret agent to be mysterious, gun-toting, and surrounded by beautiful women. Instead, Ausable is terribly fat, speaks French and German with an American accent, and stays in a gloomy sixth-floor room of an ordinary Paris hotel. Fowler feels thoroughly disappointed.

Switching on the hotel room light, they freeze: standing in the middle of the room is Max, an armed rival agent pointing a small automatic pistol! Max has broken in to steal a secret defense report concerning new military missiles that Ausable is scheduled to receive tonight.

Ausable doesn't panic. He sits heavily on an armchair, grumbling angrily about the hotel management: 'This is the second time in a month somebody has broken in through that nuisance of a balcony under my window!'
