A Digital Footprint is the permanent trail of identifiable data left behind when using digital devices, internet services, and online platforms:
- Active Digital Footprint: Created intentionally and knowingly by the user. Examples: Posting on Instagram, uploading a video to YouTube, sending an email, publishing a blog, filling out an online registration form.
- Passive Digital Footprint: Generated inadvertently without the user's active awareness. Examples: IP address logging by web servers, geolocation tracking via smartphone cell towers, browsing history captured by third-party tracking cookies, device hardware fingerprints.
Data Privacy & Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
PII is any data that can directly or indirectly distinguish an individual's identity—such as Aadhaar numbers, biometric data, phone numbers, full legal names, and credit card credentials. Modern regulations (like India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act and EU GDPR) mandate that organizations obtain explicit, informed consent before collecting, processing, or transferring user data.
