Classical Western liberalism (born in 17th–18th century Europe and America) focused almost exclusively on individual civil liberties, private property rights, and negative formal equality:
• The Indian Constitution recognized that in an ancient, deeply unequal society divided by caste, gender, and poverty, formal equal treatment merely freezes historical oppression.

1. Social Justice and Affirmative Action: It constitutionally mandated reservations (affirmative action) for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBCs, and abolished untouchability (Article 17).
