Complete Concept Guide (100% Curriculum Coverage)

1. Founding the Mauryan Empire

In 321 BCE, Chandragupta Maurya, mentored by Chanakya (author of the statecraft treatise Arthashastra), overthrew the corrupt Nanda dynasty of Magadha. He expanded his rule across northern India and defeated Seleucus Nicator, the Greek general of Alexander.

2. Ashoka and the Kalinga War

Ashoka the Great ascended the throne in 268 BCE. In 261 BCE, he conquered Kalinga (modern Odisha). Witnessing the horrific slaughter of over 100,000 soldiers and civilians filled him with deep sorrow and remorse. He renounced military conquest (bherighosha) in favor of moral conquest (dhammaghosha).

3. Ashoka's Dhamma and Rock Edicts

Ashoka's Dhamma was not a new religion, but a moral code of conduct: non-violence (ahimsa), obedience to parents, respect for teachers and ascetics, kindness to servants and animals, and religious tolerance. He carved his messages in Prakrit on stone pillars and rocks across his vast empire.
