A. What is an Endocrine Gland?
A ductless gland that pours its chemical secretions (Hormones) directly into the circulating bloodstream, which transports them to specific distant target organs.
B. Key Endocrine Glands & Disorders:
- Pituitary Gland ("Master Gland"): Located at base of brain. Secretes Growth Hormone (GH).
- Hyposecretion (childhood): Dwarfism.
- Hypersecretion (childhood): Gigantism; (adulthood): Acromegaly (gorilla-like facial enlargement).
- Thyroid Gland: In neck over windpipe. Secretes Thyroxine (requires dietary Iodine). Regulates basal metabolic rate (BMR).
- Hyposecretion: Simple Goitre (swelling of neck), Cretinism (stunted physical/mental growth in children), Myxoedema (swelling in adults).
- Hypersecretion: Exophthalmic Goitre (protruding eyeballs, high heart rate, weight loss).
- Pancreas (Islets of Langerhans): Dual / Heterocrine gland.
- Beta Cells secrete Insulin: Lowers blood glucose by converting excess glucose to glycogen in liver. *Deficiency causes Diabetes Mellitus (Hyperglycemia, sugar in urine).*
- Alpha Cells secrete Glucagon: Raises blood glucose by converting liver glycogen back into glucose.
- Adrenal Glands: Located atop kidneys. Adrenal medulla secretes Adrenaline ("Fight or Flight" hormone during emergency stress).
