Motivation is the psychological process of stimulating people to action to accomplish desired goals. In 1943, psychologist Abraham Maslow formulated the Need Hierarchy Theory based on the premise that human needs drive behavior in a hierarchical ladder:
- 1. Basic Physiological Needs: Foundational survival requirements: food, water, clothing, shelter, sleep. (In business: basic salary and comfortable working conditions).
- 2. Safety / Security Needs: Protection from physical danger, economic uncertainty, and illness. (In business: job security, provident fund, medical insurance, pension).
- 3. Affiliation / Social Needs: Need for belongingness, friendship, love, and acceptance. (In business: supportive peer groups, cordial team relationships).
- 4. Esteem Needs: Need for self-respect, autonomy, status, recognition, and prestige. (In business: job titles, executive perks, public awards).
- 5. Self-Actualization Needs (The Pinnacle): The drive to realize one's highest creative potential and "become everything one is capable of becoming." (In business: challenging creative assignments, personal growth opportunities).
