Manual formatting is tedious and breaks document hierarchy. Professional documents rely on standardized Styles and collaborative revision tracking:
Automated Table of Contents (TOC) Architecture
When headings are formatted using pre-defined paragraph styles (Heading 1 for main chapters, Heading 2 for sub-topics, Heading 3 for sections), the word processor’s TOC engine automatically scans the document, extracts headings, identifies page numbers, and constructs a hyperlinked Table of Contents. If document pagination shifts, right-clicking the TOC and selecting "Update Field -> Update entire table" synchronizes the entire index in a single click!
Collaborative Workflow Tools (Review Tab):
- Track Changes (Ctrl + Shift + E): Logs every text insertion (underlined in red/blue), deletion (strikethrough), and formatting change made by different authors with timestamps. The document owner can review each edit and click Accept or Reject.
- Comments: Inline sticky notes attached to specific text passages allowing team members to discuss revisions without altering the actual manuscript.
- Compare Documents: Compares an original draft with a revised copy, highlighting all discrepancies in a 3-pane synchronized window.
