1. Gender and Politics

The Sexual Division of Labour is a social construct, not a biological rule: women do all unpaid household chores (cooking, cleaning, caretaking) while men do paid public work. The Feminist Movement demanded equal voting rights, education, and career opportunities. In India, women's political representation in Parliament has historically lagged below 15%; however, the landmark Women's Reservation Act (2023) reserves 33% of parliamentary and assembly seats for women!

2. Religion, Communalism & The Secular State

Communalism is the dangerous belief that religion is the principal basis of social community, and that followers of different religions have mutually conflicting political interests. To combat communalism, the Indian Constitution established a Secular State:
• No official state religion.
• Fundamental Right to practice, profess, and propagate any religion (or none).
• Prohibition of discrimination based on religion (Article 15).

3. Caste and Politics: Two-Way Street

  • Caste in Politics: Political parties choose candidates matching caste demographics of constituencies, mobilize caste sentiments during elections, and promise quotas.
  • Politics in Caste: Politics reshapes caste by bringing fragmented sub-castes together into broad backward/forward coalitions, giving marginalized Dalit and Bahujan communities a powerful voice in decision-making.
