Scale of Topographical Sheets:
The Survey of India topographical sheets prescribed for ICSE are drawn on a representative scale of $1 : 50,000$ ($2\text{ cm} = 1\text{ km}$):
- Representative Fraction (R.F.): $\mathbf{1 : 50,000}$. This means $1\text{ cm}$ on the map represents $50,000\text{ cm} = 500\text{ meters} = 0.5\text{ km}$ on the ground.
- Grid Squares: Each grid square measures $2\text{ cm} \times 2\text{ cm}$, representing an area of exactly $1\text{ square kilometer } (1\text{ km}^2)$ on the actual ground!
Four-Figure vs Six-Figure Grid References:
- Golden Cartographic Rule: Always read EASTINGS before NORTHINGS (E-N Rule)! Eastings are vertical lines running north-south whose numbers increase eastwards. Northings are horizontal lines running east-west whose numbers increase northwards.
- Four-Figure Grid Reference: Locates a general grid square. Identify the easting forming the western boundary of the square, followed by the northing forming the southern boundary (e.g. square $2345$).
- Six-Figure Grid Reference: Pinpoints a specific feature with precision. Subdivide the grid square into 10 equal parts along easting and northing. Format: Easting (2 digits) + tenth of easting (1 digit) + Northing (2 digits) + tenth of northing (1 digit), e.g. temple at $234456$.
