Location and Dimensions of India:
India is situated entirely in the Northern Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere in South Asia, occupying a commanding position at the head of the Indian Ocean:
- Latitudinal Extent: $8^\circ 4'\text{ N}$ to $37^\circ 6'\text{ N}$ (span of approx $29^\circ$). The southernmost point of mainland India is Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari); the southernmost point of the Indian Union is Indira Point in Great Nicobar ($6^\circ 45'\text{ N}$, submerged during 2004 tsunami); northernmost point is Indira Col in Ladakh.
- Longitudinal Extent: $68^\circ 7'\text{ E}$ (Ghuar Mota, Gujarat) to $97^\circ 25'\text{ E}$ (Kibithu, Arunachal Pradesh) (span of approx $29^\circ$). Longitudinal difference creates a local solar time difference of nearly 2 hours ($29^\circ \times 4\text{ mins} \approx 116\text{ minutes}$) between Arunachal Pradesh in the east and Gujarat in the west!
- Land and Coastline Frontiers: Total geographical area is $3.28\text{ million sq km}$ ($2.4\%$ of world's total land area, 7th largest country). Land frontier: $15,200\text{ km}$; Total coastline (including islands): $7,516.6\text{ km}$.
- Neighboring Countries: Land borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan (NW), China, Nepal, and Bhutan (North), Myanmar and Bangladesh (East). Bangladesh shares the longest land border with India ($4,096\text{ km}$). Island neighbors: Sri Lanka (separated by Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar) and Maldives (separated by Eight Degree Channel from Minicoy).
