Early Dreams in Karnal: Born in Karnal, Haryana, Kalpana Chawla was never bounded by small-town expectations. After graduating from Tagore Baal Niketan School, she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, despite her father's initial reservations.
Education in the United States: She moved to the United States for higher education, earning a Master's degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, followed by a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado in 1988. She later married Jean-Pierre Harrison, a flight instructor, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
NASA Career & First Flight: In 1994, she was selected by NASA for astronaut training. Her first space mission aboard Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-87) in 1997 lasted 15 days, 16 hours, and 34 minutes, traveling 10.45 million kilometers across 252 orbits around Earth.
The Final Mission (STS-107): On January 16, 2003, Kalpana blasted off for her second flight aboard Columbia alongside a 7-member international crew. The mission carried out 80 scientific experiments regarding microgravity, plant growth, and metal alloy processing. Tragically, on February 1, 2003, during its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere at 200,000 feet traveling at 20,000 km/h, Columbia broke apart over Texas, killing all astronauts on board.
Her Timeless Message: From space, Kalpana sent a historic message to students in Chandigarh: "The path from dreams to success does exist. May you have the vision to find it, the courage to get onto it... Wishing you a great journey."
