Biophysical Mechanism of the Greenhouse Effect
Short-wavelength solar ultraviolet and visible radiation easily penetrates the atmosphere to warm the Earth’s surface. In turn, the warm terrestrial surface re-radiates heat back toward space as long-wavelength infrared radiation. Certain atmospheric trace gases absorb this outgoing thermal radiation and re-emit it toward the Earth, acting as an insulating thermal blanket. This natural phenomenon is the Greenhouse Effect.
Primary Greenhouse Gases & Proportional Contribution
Industrial fossil fuel combustion and land-clearing have driven atmospheric concentrations to unprecedented peaks:
• Carbon Dioxide ($CO_2$): Accounts for $pprox 60\%$ of anthropogenic warming; generated by thermal power plants, vehicle exhaust, and forest fires.
• Methane ($CH_4$): Accounts for $pprox 20\%$ of warming; released from waterlogged anaerobic paddy fields, decomposing landfills, and livestock enteric fermentation.
• Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): Synthetic refrigerants that deplete stratospheric ozone while acting as potent greenhouse agents thousands of times stronger than $CO_2$.
• Nitrous Oxide ($N_2O$) & Water Vapour: Derived from chemical fertilizers and heightened tropical evaporation.
Catastrophic Global & Regional Consequences
• Polar Deglaciation: Rapid melting of Greenland ice sheets and Himalayan glaciers elevates global mean sea levels by 3-4 mm annually.
• Bengal Delta Crisis: In the Sundarbans, Lohachara Island has completely submerged, and over half of Ghoramara Island has eroded into the Bay of Bengal, creating thousands of environmental refugees.
• Extreme Weather Events: Amplified sea surface temperatures spawn devastating super-cyclones (Amphan, Yaas), intense unseasonal droughts, and catastrophic flash floods.
Sundarbans Mangrove Degradation Case Study
Hyper-saline sea water incursions into freshwater estuaries stunt the growth of Sundari (*Heritiera fomes*). Degradation of protective mangrove buffers exposes vulnerable coastal embankments to tidal storm surges, breaching dams and salinizing agricultural paddy fields.
Critical Board Observation (Is the Greenhouse Effect Inherently Evil?)
Crucial Distinction: Without the natural greenhouse effect, Earth’s average surface temperature would plummet to $-18^\circ ext{C}$, freezing all oceans and making biological life impossible! The ecological crisis is caused by excessive anthropogenic greenhouse gas accumulation, which super-heats the planet beyond natural equilibrium.
