The Concept of Biological Immunity:
Immunity is the body's defense capacity to recognize, neutralize, destroy, and resist invasion by pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) and toxic foreign antigens.
- Innate (Natural / Non-Specific) Immunity: Inherited from birth, providing immediate baseline protection without prior pathogen exposure:
• Physical Barriers: Intact skin (stratum corneum prevents bacterial entry), mucous membranes of respiratory/digestive tracts (traps microbes).
• Physiological / Chemical Barriers: Hydrochloric acid in gastric juice ($\text{pH} \approx 1.5 - 2$, kills swallowed bacteria), lysozyme enzyme in tears and saliva (hydrolyzes bacterial cell walls), acidic vaginal secretions.
• Cellular Barriers: Phagocytic white blood cells (neutrophils and monocytes) that engulf pathogens. - Acquired (Adaptive / Specific) Immunity: Developed during an individual's lifetime following exposure to a specific antigen, characterized by immunological memory:
• Active Acquired Immunity: Resistance developed when the body's own immune system produces specific antibodies and memory cells in response to an antigen (either via surviving natural infection or via vaccination). Slow to develop, but provides long-lasting, often lifelong protection!
• Passive Acquired Immunity: Immediate temporary protection conferred by receiving ready-made, pre-formed antibodies from an outside source (e.g. maternal antibodies crossing placenta [$\text{IgG}$] and colostrum [$\text{IgA}$] to newborn infant; anti-tetanus serum [ATS]; anti-rabies serum; snake antivenin). Fast-acting, but short-lived (a few weeks) because the body develops no memory cells!
Major Vaccines & Toxoids:
| Vaccine Name | Target Disease | Type of Biological Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) | Tuberculosis (TB) | Live attenuated bacterial strain of Mycobacterium bovis |
| DPT (Triple Antigen) | Diphtheria, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Tetanus | Combination of Diphtheria toxoid, killed Bordetella pertussis, and Tetanus toxoid |
| MMR | Measles, Mumps, Rubella (German Measles) | Live attenuated viral combination |
| OPV (Sabin) / IPV (Salk) | Poliomyelitis (Infantile Paralysis) | Oral live attenuated virus (Sabin) or inactivated injectable virus (Salk) |
| TAB | Typhoid, Paratyphoid A and B | Killed bacterial vaccine of Salmonella species |
