Estimation Rules
- Rounding to nearest 10: If ones digit $\ge 5$, round up; if $<5$, round down (e.g. $73 \to 70$; $75 \to 80$).
- Rounding to nearest 100: Look at tens digit: $\ge 5$ rounds up, $<5$ rounds down (e.g. $458 \to 500$; $432 \to 400$).
- General Rule for Products: Round off each factor to its greatest place value (e.g. $578 \times 161 \approx 600 \times 200 = 120,000$).
Roman Numerals
Symbols: $\text{I} = 1, \text{V} = 5, \text{X} = 10, \text{L} = 50, \text{C} = 100, \text{D} = 500, \text{M} = 1000$.
- Symbols $\text{I, X, C, M}$ can be repeated up to three times consecutively; $\text{V, L, D}$ are never repeated.
- Smaller symbol to the right is added: $\text{VI} = 5 + 1 = 6$; $\text{XII} = 10 + 2 = 12$.
- Smaller symbol to the left is subtracted: $\text{IV} = 5 - 1 = 4$; $\text{IX} = 10 - 1 = 9$; $\text{XC} = 100 - 10 = 90$.
- $\text{V, L, D}$ are never subtracted. $\text{I}$ can only be subtracted from $\text{V}$ and $\text{X}$. $\text{X}$ can only be subtracted from $\text{L}$ and $\text{C}$.
