Perimeter and Area

In JAC Board Class 6 Mathematics, "Mensuration" deals with measurement of 2D geometrical figures: perimeter (closed boundary distance) and area (surface region enclosed). Formulas include perimeter of rectangles, squares, and regular polygons, and area of rectangles and squares using square grid unit tiling.

🌾 Have You Ever Wondered?

How does a farmer know how many metres of wire fence to buy versus how much grass seed to plant for his rectangular field?

Fencing is Perimeter (1D boundary length), while seeding is Area (2D enclosed surface)! Master the fundamental formulas of mensuration.

Why This Chapter Matters

In JAC Board Class 6 Mathematics, "Mensuration" deals with measurement of 2D geometrical figures: perimeter (closed boundary distance) and area (surface region enclosed). Formulas include perimeter of rectangles, squares, and regular polygons, and area of rectangles and squares using square grid unit tiling.

Before You Begin (Prerequisites)

  • Basic shapes (rectangle, square)
  • Multiplication and addition

What You Will Learn (Core Objectives)

  • Distinguish Perimeter (linear boundary) from Area (2D region).
  • Calculate Perimeter of rectangle: $P = 2(l + b)$ and square: $P = 4s$.
  • Calculate Perimeter of regular polygons: $P = n \times s$.
  • Calculate Area of rectangle: $A = l \times b$ and square: $A = s^2$.

JCERT 2026–27: Regular schools (Non-SOE) — Chapter 17 · Perimeter and Area. Syllabus pages 254–276. These notes follow this topic. Official syllabus. Official JCERT Hindi textbook. Some source PDFs are damaged. The supplementary reference uses different chapter numbering.

1. Perimeter: Boundary Length

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside edge of a closed 2D figure.

  • Rectangle: $P = 2(l + b)$ where $l$ is length and $b$ is breadth.
  • Square: $P = 4 \times s$ where $s$ is side length.
  • Equilateral Triangle: $P = 3 \times s$.
  • Regular Polygon with $n$ sides: $P = n \times s$ (e.g. Regular Pentagon $= 5s$, Regular Hexagon $= 6s$).

2. Area: Enclosed 2D Surface

Area is the measure of the region enclosed inside the boundary of a closed figure, measured in square units ($\text{cm}^2, \text{m}^2$).

  • Rectangle: $\text{Area} = \text{Length} \times \text{Breadth} = l \times b$.
  • Square: $\text{Area} = \text{Side} \times \text{Side} = s^2$.
Unit Consistency Rule: Length and breadth must always be converted to the same unit before calculating area or perimeter!

Key Formulas, Identities & Theorems

Rectangle Perimeter & Area
$$P = 2(l + b), \quad A = l \times b$$
Fundamental rectangle formulas.
Square Perimeter & Area
$$P = 4s, \quad A = s^2$$
Square formulas where s is side length.

Conceptual Solved Examples & Case Studies

Example 1
A rectangular piece of land measures 0.7 km by 0.5 km. Each side is to be fenced with 4 rows of wires. What is the length of wire needed?
Step-by-Step Solution:
Perimeter $= 2(l + b) = 2(0.7 + 0.5) = 2(1.2) = 2.4\text{ km}$.
Since 4 rows of wire are needed:
Total wire length $= 4 \times 2.4\text{ km} = \mathbf{9.6\text{ km}}$ (or $9,600\text{ m}$).
Example 2
How many tiles of size 12 cm × 5 cm will be needed to fit in a rectangular region of 100 cm by 144 cm?
Step-by-Step Solution:
Area of region $= 100 \times 144 = 14,400\text{ cm}^2$.
Area of one tile $= 12 \times 5 = 60\text{ cm}^2$.
Number of tiles $= \frac{14400}{60} = \mathbf{240\text{ tiles}}$.

Common Misconceptions & Examiner Traps

Common Misconception

Multiplying length in metres by breadth in centimetres.

Scientific Reality & Correction

Units must match! If length is 2 m and breadth is 50 cm, convert breadth to 0.5 m before multiplying: $2 \times 0.5 = 1\text{ m}^2$.

Visual Learning & Conceptual Map

Perimeter (1D) vs Area (2D)

Boundary Length vs Surface Region

Perimeter

Rectangle: P = 2(l + b)
Square: P = 4s
Units: cm, m, km (Linear)

Area

Rectangle: A = l × b
Square: A = s²
Units: cm², m² (Square)

Chapter Summary & 10 Key Takeaways

Takeaway 1
Perimeter is total boundary length: Rectangle $P=2(l+b)$, Square $P=4s$.
Takeaway 2
Area is surface measure: Rectangle $A=l \times b$, Square $A=s^2$.
Takeaway 3
Always harmonize units before calculation.

1
If the perimeter of a square is 64 cm, what is its area?
Reveal Answer & Explanation
Answer: Side $s = \frac{64}{4} = 16\text{ cm}$. Area $= s^2 = 16^2 = \mathbf{256\text{ cm}^2}$.
Find side from perimeter first.
