Four Underlying Structural Causes of World War I:
- Nationalism and Imperialism: Aggressive narrow nationalism (e.g. Pan-Slavism, Pan-Germanism) combined with intense imperialist rivalry among European powers to seize colonies in Africa and Asia for raw materials and captive markets.
- Division of Europe into Secret Hostile Blocs:
• Triple Alliance (1882): Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.
• Triple Entente (1907): Great Britain, France, and Russia. A dispute involving one power inevitably dragged all six great nations into global conflict! - Militarism and Armaments Race: Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm II began massive naval expansion to challenge British naval supremacy, constructing the Kiel Canal and Dreadnought battleships.
- The Sarajevo Crisis (Immediate Cause, 28th June 1914): Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne, and his wife Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo (Bosnia) by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Serbian secret revolutionary society 'Black Hand' (Union or Death). Austria delivered a humiliating 48-hour ultimatum to Serbia; when Serbia rejected certain demands compromising her sovereignty, Austria declared war on Serbia on 28th July 1914, triggering the activation of the alliance web!
The Treaty of Versailles (28th June 1919, Hall of Mirrors, Versailles):
A dictated, punitive, humiliating treaty imposed by the Allied victorious powers (Clemenceau of France, Lloyd George of Britain, Woodrow Wilson of USA) upon defeated Germany:
- War Guilt Clause (Article 231): Germany was forced to accept sole moral and legal responsibility for causing all loss and damage of the war.
- Crushing Financial Reparations: Germany was ordered to pay an astronomical indemnity of $\mathbf{\pounds 6,600\text{ million}}$ (approx $33\text{ billion dollars}$) to the Allies.
- Territorial Disseverment: Alsace-Lorraine was restored to France; the coal-rich Saar basin placed under League control with coal mines ceded to France for 15 years; Polish Corridor carved out to give Poland access to the Baltic Sea, severing East Prussia from Germany; Danzig made a Free City; all overseas German colonies in Africa and the Pacific were confiscated as League Mandates.
- Military Demilitarization: German army slashed to $100,000$ volunteer troops; conscription banned; air force (Luftwaffe) and submarines completely prohibited; navy limited to 6 small battleships; the Rhineland demilitarized completely to a depth of $50\text{ km}$ east of the Rhine.
Historical Consequence: The punitive Treaty of Versailles sowed the bitter seeds of German revanchism, hyperinflation, and directly fostered the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, making World War II virtually inevitable!
