JCERT 2026–27: Regular schools (Non-SOE) — Chapter 9 · Line, Line Segment and Ray. Syllabus pages 168–179. These notes follow this topic. Official syllabus. Official JCERT Hindi textbook. Some source PDFs are damaged. The supplementary reference uses different chapter numbering.

Concept 1

A point indicates a position. We name points using capital letters, such as A and B. A dot represents a point; the thickness of the dot is not a mathematical measurement.

Concept 2

A line extends without end in both directions. A line segment AB has two endpoints and a measurable length. A ray AB begins at A, passes through B and extends without end in that direction.

Concept 3

Through two distinct points there is exactly one straight line. A curved path changes direction. To measure a segment, place the ruler’s zero mark at one endpoint and read the scale at the other.

Conceptual Solved Examples & Case Studies

Example 1
If A is at 2 cm and B at 7 cm on a ruler, find AB.
Step-by-Step Solution:
AB = 7 − 2 = 5 cm. Subtract the initial reading when an endpoint is not at zero.

Common Misconceptions & Examiner Traps

Common Misconception

Common misconception

Scientific Reality & Correction

A ray has one endpoint; a segment has two. A line has no endpoints.
