In Class 11 Biology, "Anatomy of Flowering Plants" provides an authoritative, curriculum-verified master resource aligned with the 2026–27 NCERT syllabus.

🔬 Have You Ever Wondered?

How do forest botanists determine the exact 300-year age of a giant oak tree simply by counting concentric circular wood rings on a tree stump? Internal plant histology and secondary growth record historical climate.

In Class 11 Biology, "Anatomy of Flowering Plants" provides an authoritative, curriculum-verified master resource aligned with the 2026–27 NCERT syllabus.

  • Plant cells from Class 9.
  • Xylem and phloem.
  • Tissues.

  • Classify Plant Tissues: Meristematic (Apical, Intercalary, Lateral) and Permanent (Simple: Parenchyma, Collenchyma, Sclerenchyma; Complex: Xylem, Phloem).
  • Explain the Three Tissue Systems: Epidermal (stomata, trichomes), Ground, and Vascular (radial vs conjoint, open vs closed bundles).
  • Contrast internal anatomy of Dicot Root vs Monocot Root.
  • Contrast internal anatomy of Dicot Stem vs Monocot Stem.
  • Contrast Dorsiventral (Dicot) Leaf vs Isobilateral (Monocot) Leaf.
  • Explain Secondary Growth: Vascular Cambium activity, Spring wood vs Autumn wood (Annual Rings), Heartwood vs Sapwood, and Cork Cambium (Phellogen).

1 1. Simple & Complex Plant Tissues
2 2. Root, Stem & Leaf Anatomy
3 3. Secondary Growth & Annual Rings

1. Simple & Complex Plant Tissues

  • Meristems: Primary meristems (Apical, Intercalary) build plant length; Lateral meristems (Vascular cambium, Cork cambium) build girth/thickness.
  • Simple Tissues: Parenchyma (thin-walled, photosynthesis/storage); Collenchyma (pectin thickenings at corners, flexible mechanical support); Sclerenchyma (dead, heavily lignified walls, fibers and stone-cell sclereids).
  • Complex Vascular Tissues: Xylem: Tracheids, vessels (absent in gymnosperms!), xylem fibers, living xylem parenchyma. Phloem: Sieve tube elements, companion cells, phloem fibers, phloem parenchyma.

2. Root, Stem & Leaf Anatomy

  • Dicot vs Monocot Stem: Dicot stem has vascular bundles arranged in a ring with open cambium (capable of secondary growth); Monocot stem has scattered closed vascular bundles enclosed in sclerenchymatous bundle sheaths.
  • Dicot vs Monocot Leaf: Dicot leaf is dorsiventral with mesophyll differentiated into palisade and spongy parenchyma; Monocot leaf is isobilateral with undifferentiated mesophyll and large empty water-filled Bulliform cells on upper epidermis!

3. Secondary Growth & Annual Rings

Vascular cambium produces Secondary Xylem (Wood) inside and Secondary Phloem outside. In spring, cambium is active, producing wide vessels (Spring/Early wood); in winter, it produces narrow dense vessels (Autumn/Late wood). The two concentric seasonal bands form an Annual Ring — counting rings determines tree age (Dendrochronology)! Inner dark dead wood is non-conducting Heartwood; outer living wood is conducting Sapwood.

1
What are 'Annual Rings'? How are they used to estimate the age of a tree?
An annual ring consists of two concentric bands of secondary xylem produced in a single year: lighter, wider Spring wood (Early wood) formed when cambium is highly active, and darker, denser Autumn wood (Late wood) formed in winter. Counting these rings from the pith to the bark gives the exact chronological age of the tree (Dendrochronology).
Concentric seasonal xylem bands; counting them gives tree age.
2
Differentiate between Dicot Stem and Monocot Stem on the basis of vascular bundles.
In a Dicot stem, vascular bundles are arranged in a regular ring, are conjoint, collateral, and 'open' (possess a layer of cambium between xylem and phloem, capable of secondary growth). In a Monocot stem, vascular bundles are scattered throughout the ground tissue, are conjoint, collateral, and 'closed' (no cambium, no secondary growth).
Ring-arranged open bundles vs scattered closed bundles.
3
What is the function of Bulliform cells in grasses? How do they help during water stress?
Bulliform cells are large, empty, colorless specialized epidermal cells on the adaxial surface of grass leaves. When they absorb water and are turgid, the leaf blade unfolds; during water stress, they lose turgor and become flaccid, causing the leaf to roll inward to minimize transpiration surface area.
Regulate leaf rolling in grasses to reduce water loss.
4
Differentiate between Heartwood (Duramen) and Sapwood (Alburnum).
Heartwood is the central, non-functional, dark-colored wood filled with tannins, resins, and oils that provides mechanical strength and resists microbial attack without conducting water; Sapwood is the peripheral, light-colored, functional wood that actively conducts water and minerals.
Dark non-conducting inner core vs light water-conducting outer xylem.
5
What are Casparian Strips? Where are they located and what is their biological function?
Casparian strips are continuous bands of waterproof waxy suberin deposition on the radial and tangential walls of root endodermal cells. They block apoplastic water movement, forcing water and minerals to enter the symplast through cell membranes into the xylem.
Suberin bands in root endodermis regulating symplastic water flow.
