(Plant Kingdom)

In Class 11 Biology, "Plant Kingdom" provides an authoritative, curriculum-verified master resource aligned with the 2026–27 NCERT syllabus.

🌿 Have You Ever Wondered?

How did primitive green slime floating in prehistoric oceans evolve into towering 100-meter-tall California Redwood trees capable of pumping water against gravity to the clouds? The evolutionary transition from Algae and Bryophytes to Gymnosperms and Angiosperms.

In Class 11 Biology, "Plant Kingdom" provides an authoritative, curriculum-verified master resource aligned with the 2026–27 NCERT syllabus.

  • Biological classification from Chapter 2.
  • Photosynthesis.
  • Cell walls.

  • Classify Plant Kingdom: Algae (Chlorophyceae, Phaeophyceae, Rhodophyceae), Bryophytes (Amphibians of plant kingdom), Pteridophytes (first vascular land plants), Gymnosperms (naked seeds), and Angiosperms.
  • Contrast pigments and stored food: Chlorophyll a/b, Fucoxanthin (laminarin/mannitol), Phycoerythrin (floridean starch).
  • Analyze Alternation of Generations: Haplontic, Diplontic, and Haplo-diplontic life cycles.
  • Explain Heterospory and the evolutionary origin of the Seed Habit in Pteridophytes (Selaginella, Salvinia).
  • Explain Gymnosperms: Conifers, Cycas (coralloid roots with cyanobacteria), Pinus (mycorrhiza), naked ovules.

1. Algae: The Photosynthetic Pioneers

Classified by photosynthetic pigments and cell wall storage:
• Chlorophyceae (Green Algae): Chlorophyll a and b; stored as Starch in pyrenoids (e.g. Volvox, Chlamydomonas, Spirogyra).
• Phaeophyceae (Brown Algae): Chlorophyll a, c, and Fucoxanthin; stored as complex carbohydrates (Laminarin or Mannitol). Body divided into holdfast, stipe, and frond (e.g. Laminaria, Fucus, Sargassum).
• Rhodophyceae (Red Algae): Possess red pigment r-phycoerythrin; stored as Floridean starch; produce commercial hydrocolloid Agar-agar (e.g. Polysiphonia, Porphyra, Gelidium).

2. Bryophytes & Pteridophytes

  • Bryophytes ('Amphibians of the Plant Kingdom'): Live in soil but depend on water for sexual reproduction (flagellated antherozoids swim to archegonium). Gametophyte is dominant free-living; sporophyte is dependent (e.g. Marchantia, Sphagnum peat moss).
  • Pteridophytes: First terrestrial plants possessing vascular tissues (Xylem and Phloem). Sporophyte is dominant. Heterospory (producing microspores and megaspores) in Selaginella and Salvinia is the crucial evolutionary precursor of the Seed Habit!

3. Gymnosperms: Naked Seeds

Ovules are not enclosed inside an ovary wall; seeds remain naked before and after fertilization!
• Giant Redwood (Sequoia) is one of the tallest tree species.
• Cycas: Coralloid roots associated with nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria; unbranched stem.
• Pinus: Branched stem; symbiotic fungal mycorrhizal roots.

1
Why are Bryophytes called the 'Amphibians of the Plant Kingdom'?
Because although they live in damp terrestrial soil, they are fundamentally dependent on water for sexual reproduction, as flagellated male gametes (antherozoids) must swim through water to reach the archegonium for fertilization.
Live on land but require water for sexual reproduction.
2
Differentiate between Chlorophyceae, Phaeophyceae, and Rhodophyceae on the basis of: (i) Major pigments, (ii) Stored food material.
उत्तर: (i) Chlorophyceae: Chlorophyll a, b; Stored food: Starch. (ii) Phaeophyceae: Chlorophyll a, c, fucoxanthin; Stored food: Laminarin and mannitol. (iii) Rhodophyceae: Chlorophyll a, d, r-phycoerythrin; Stored food: Floridean starch.
Pigments and food storage comparison across 3 algal classes.
3
What is 'Heterospory'? How did it lead to the origin of the seed habit in vascular plants?
Heterospory is the production of two distinct types of spores: smaller microspores and larger megaspores (seen in Selaginella). The megaspore develops into a female gametophyte that is retained inside the parent sporophyte, providing embryonic nourishment—the foundational precursor of the seed habit.
Production of microspores and megaspores; retains embryo on parent sporophyte.
4
Mention two unique structural features of Gymnosperms.
(1) Their ovules are naked, not enclosed inside an ovary wall, so seeds remain exposed without fruit cover, (2) Specialized roots: Pinus has mycorrhizal roots and Cycas has coralloid roots with nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria.
Naked seeds and specialized mycorrhizal/coralloid roots.
5
What is the ecological and commercial importance of the moss Sphagnum?
Sphagnum (peat moss) provides peat that has long been used as domestic fuel; because of its exceptional water-holding capacity, it is used worldwide as packing material for trans-shipment of living plants and flowers.
Produces peat fuel and acts as water-holding packing material.
