How did R.H. Whittaker replace Aristotle's simple division of animals into 'red blood vs non-red blood' with the famous Five Kingdom classification that placed fungi in their own kingdom separate from plants? Microbial taxonomy mirrors evolutionary phylogenetics.

1. Whittaker's Five Kingdom Criteria
In 1969, R.H. Whittaker proposed the Five Kingdom Classification based on five scientific criteria: (1) Cell structure (prokaryotic vs eukaryotic), (2) Body organization (unicellular vs multicellular), (3) Mode of nutrition (autotrophic vs heterotrophic absorptive/ingestive), (4) Reproduction, and (5) Phylogenetic evolutionary relationships.
2. Monera & Protista
- Kingdom Monera (Prokaryotes): Archaebacteria survive extreme environments (Methanogens produce biogas from cow dung). Eubacteria include photosynthetic Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae with heterocysts for nitrogen fixation like Nostoc).
- Kingdom Protista (Unicellular Eukaryotes): Diatoms (siliceous indestructible cell walls forming diatomaceous earth); Dinoflagellates (cause toxic red tides like Gonyaulax); Euglena (mixotrophic); Protozoans (Amoeba, Plasmodium).
3. Fungi, Viruses & Prions
Fungi possess chitinous cell walls and heterotrophic saprophytic nutrition. Viruses are non-cellular crystalline infectious nucleoproteins containing DNA or RNA (never both!), obligate parasites that awaken only inside host cells. Viroids are free infectious RNA without a protein coat (discovered by T.O. Diener); Prions are abnormally folded infectious proteins causing Mad Cow disease.

1
What are the main criteria used by R.H. Whittaker for the Five Kingdom Classification?
(1) Complexity of cell structure, (2) Complexity of body organization, (3) Mode of nutrition, (4) Mode of reproduction, (5) Phylogenetic evolutionary relationships.
Cell structure, body organization, nutrition, reproduction, phylogeny.
2
What are Methanogens? State their ecological importance.
Methanogens are anaerobic archaebacteria found in the guts of ruminant animals (cows, buffaloes); they ferment dung to produce methane gas (biogas) for clean rural energy.
Archaebacteria in ruminant guts producing biogas.
3
Why are diatoms called the 'pearls of the ocean' and what is diatomaceous earth?
Diatoms are microscopic photosynthetic protists with double overlapping silica cell walls that fit like a soapbox. Indestructible after death, their silica deposits accumulate over billions of years into 'diatomaceous earth', mined for filtration.
Silica-walled phytoplankton forming filtration earth.
4
What is the difference between a Virus and a Viroid?
A Virus consists of genetic material (DNA or RNA) enclosed inside a protective protein coat (capsid); a Viroid consists purely of free single-stranded RNA of low molecular weight with no protein coat.
Virus has protein capsid; viroid is naked infectious RNA.
5
What are Lichens and why are they considered excellent pollution indicators?
Lichens are symbiotic partnerships between an alga (phycobiont) and a fungus (mycobiont). They do not grow in polluted environments (especially areas contaminated with sulfur dioxide), making them natural air quality bio-indicators.
Algal-fungal symbiosis sensitive to SO2 air pollution.
